Demonetization - is it a path for the new emerging india or a costly mistake?

India announced on November 8th that the Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes available in the country is no longer a legal vendor from the next day onward. The significance of the decision is that it formed 86% of the value of the cash prevailing in the country. One of the biggest problem with cash transactions is that it is not easily traceable. So the pitch made by the government for scrapping of  high denomination notes is to reduce corruption and black money. Lets analyse this in more detail.

For an emerging country like India where digital transactions forms only 14% of all the transactions this is a huge step. This goes well in promoting digital transactions however if you consider the fact that 60% of the population don't even have a bank account then you can imagine the work involved in making this happen. So demonetization in its true sense (scrapping of all cash) is definitely ruled out. So after removing Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes the government in turn came up with Rs 2000 notes. So then you begin to wonder what is the use of this monumental exercise.

The dimensions of the Rs 2000 notes were altered that required re-calibration of all the existing ATM's in the country. That meant 2 lakh ATM's across the country had to be re-calibrated. Even after one month since the decision was implemented the country has to still live with rationing of cash (only 4000 per day in ATM and 24000 per week in a bank branch). The only reason for this change is the threat of fake notes. The fake notes were strikingly similar to the real ones. Only very careful observation one could make out the difference. Common man could easily be deceived by these fake notes. The magnitude of the problem can be gauged by the fact that this was seemingly being printed from other countries. So its not possible to stop the threat even after knowing where its originating from. So sooner or later this kind of move was expected from India to keep itself as a stable economy.

Obvious question emerging from this is why this was not implemented as a gradual process. Why India had to resort to scrapping of notes overnight instead of spreading it over say 6 months or 1 year. If say this was spread for 1 year then all the fake notes would have ended up in the hands of innocent people as the fake notes were so similar. This would have killed far more innocent people than 70+ that we are witnessing now. Could this have been a little slower like say 1 week or so? The answer to this is evident if you see what black money holders did in the 4 hour window when the notes were valid. They went and bought gold at exorbitant prices to hide all their black money.

Many private banks in a process to reduce manpower used to penalize people visiting branches. They disperse money as well as accept money using ATM machines. For eg. Citibank has only 2 branches in the entire city of Bangalore where it has thousands of accounts.

In the wake of demonetization drive the government restored to keeping track of the old notes that are deposited with the bank with complete ID proofs, PAN card details etc.  ATM's could not be used due to the requirement of re-calibration. Also ATM could not be used to accept old notes. This made everyone throng to the bank branches in huge numbers. Also the verification requirements made the entire process painfully slow.

Is this worth all the trouble as the common man seems to be inconvenienced in the entire exercise. This is used as a ploy by the opposition to stall the proceeding of the Parliament. I am here reminded of the quote by Chanakya - the greatest strategist / politician of all times "When all the opposition is up in arms against you then you can bet that you have taken the right decision". This is because if it is indeed a bad decision then all the opposition will keep quiet and allow to make the mistake. Only if they feel its a good decision that helps the citizens and effects themselves only then will they try to stop the decision.

Lets now try to analyse whats advantages and disadvantages of this decision. Some of the easily identifiable advantages is that it will eliminate fake notes for at least an year. It will take a minimum of one year for anyone to replicate the new notes having different dimensions. Till a couple of years back all the raw materials used to print currency notes all over the world used to come from only a handful of companies. This is dangerous if a country decides to print another countries notes. This has changed now with the new notes as the government is aggressively pursuing make in India. From the security standpoint this is a huge change as it will be easy to catch and punish people involved in making fake notes assuming it wont be easy to replicate the same technology elsewhere.

Fake notes has been a problem in all the border areas. Especially the J&K used to receive a lot of fake notes and we see that after demonetization these states have suddenly become peaceful. In eastern India, lots of naxals have started surrendering. Since they lost their livelyhood luring gullible people to join them offering notes. Suddenly withdrawing the notes did effect these anti-social element badly.

However, did it affect the people having black money. The moot point as mentioned by the PM. This may be questionable since even after 3 months only about 4000 crores of black money has been recovered by having raids across the country. This is only a fraction of what is expected to exist in the form of black money.

Does Li-Wi have the capability to replace Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi is used very commonly for accessing the internet. Now we are hearing of a new technology that is to replace Wi-Fi. It is also named similarly and is called Li-Fi. So what is Li-Fi? And does it have the capability to replace Wi-Fi in the future. Lets get to answer these questions.

First lets try to understand what is Li-Fi.

Li-Fi is the short form for Light Fidelity. It is a way to use light for communication. It proposes to use the visible light for communication instead of radio waves. This is the basic difference between Li-Fi and Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is Wireless Fidelity and it uses radio waves that cannot be heard by human ear for communication whereas Li-Fi intends to use visible light for communication.

Formula One makes grand entry with Indian Grand prix

Formula one is going to hit india very soon.

In october 2011 Indians will witness the world's best sports car drivers showcase their driving skills in the ultimate racing event. Indian Grand Prix will be the 18th race on the 20-race 2011 calendar, released by the FIA
after a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council.

The race track will come up at Greater Noida. Will this event also go the Common Wealth games way? Only time will tell. However, we can hope that FIA does really approve the race track being formed in India.

India made it to the formula one with a team Force India. However, it is yet to have any drivers make it to formula One. If a racing track comes up in the country then surely there will be a lot of people getting into racing.

The racing track is expected to be used not only for car racing but also for moto GP.

Indian Rupee (INR) gets an unique identity

, India has finally got a symbol for the Rupee and joined a select club
of countries whose currencies have an unique identity. The Cabinet on
Thursday approved the new symbol for the Indian rupee - an amalgam of
the Devnagiri 'Ra' and the Roman capital 'R' without the stem. The
Rupee will join the select club of global currencies like the US
dollar, the British Pound, European Euro and Japanese Yen that have
unique symbols. The growing influence of the Indian economy in the
global space has prompted this move.
Presently, the abbreviation for the Indian Rupee, 'Re' or 'Rs' is used
by India's neighbours Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka as well.
It would take about six months in India and about two years to make it
recognized internationally. All new notes will now bear the symbol

Natural wonders: Blue hole

Sink holes is a depression or hole in the surface of the earth. i.e. The surface can sink into a hole and this can happen suddenly.

sinkholes are common where the rock below the land surface can naturally be dissolved by circulating ground water. As the rock dissolves, spaces develop underground. These sinkholes are dramatic because the surface land stays intact until there is no support below which causes the land to sink. A sudden collapse of the land surface occurs.

A variant of this is the blue hole. This is a sink hole in water or sea. There are also called vertical caves. The dissolved oxygen levels in such holes are very low, hence doesnt support any life, however some forms of bacteria can survive.

Blue holes can be very spectacular if they are found in areas having coral reefs. Such blue holes can become tourist destinations. There are many different Blue Holes located around the world Belize, Bahamas, Red Sea etc.

Why sanskrit is superior

In the English language the alphabets from A to Z are not arranged in any logical or rational manner. There is no reason why F is followed by G or why P is followed by Q, etc. The alphabets in English are all arranged haphazardly and at random. On the other hand, Panini in his first fourteen Sutras arranged alphabets in the Sanskrit language in a very scientific and logical manner, after close observation of the sounds in human speech.

Thus, for example the vowels, a, aa, i, ee, u, oo, ae, ai, o, ou are arranged according to the shape of the mouth when these sounds are emitted, a and aa, are pronounced from the throat, i and ee from the palate, o and oo from the lips, etc. In the same way the consonants have been arranged in a sequence on a scientific pattern. The (ka) varga (i.e. ka, kha, ga, gha, nga) are emitted from the throat, the (cha) varga from the palate, the ( ta ) varga from the roof of the mouth, the (ta ) varga from the teeth, and the (pa ) varga from the lips.

No language in the world has its alphabets arranged in such a rational and systematic manner. And when we see how deeply our ancestors went in the seemingly simple matter of arranging the alphabets we can realize how deeply they went in more advanced matters.

Now if you are wondering how that would make a difference then can you think of writing a word in Sanskrit which you cannot pronounce?

To be continued...

Force India - A force to reckon with !!!

Force India created history today by finishing in the podium in the Belgium Grand Prix. Fisichella took force india to be second in the race. Earlier, he had got the pole position. Fisichella started from pole position but Ferrari's Kimi Kaikkonen passed him at the end of the safety car period.

Before this race the 'force india' was even struggling to get any points. The best they could get was the 10th position. This is a great result for Force India. Suddenly, with this race Force India seems to be a force that cannot be taken lightly.

After buying Spykar F1 team Mallya formed the Force India and entered Formula One motor racing. The team was formed in October 2007. According to Mallya, the previous year the car remained unchanged to the spykar cars of 2007 which left no mark in the F1 racing. But this year new aerodynamic to the cars suddenly changed the scenario.

Tulsi scares Swine flu away!!!!!

Tulsi a very commonly used natural herb is beleived to have a remedy for Swine Flu. Ayurvedic practitioners claim that Tulsi can not only keep the dreaded swine flu at bay but also help in fast recovery of an afflicted person.

Ayurveda, the Indian traditional 'science of life', always has a remedy for diseases when every other stream of medicine fails. Now, at a time when swine flu is spreading like wildfire across the world, Ayurveda has the remedy in the form of the miraculous herb, Tulsi.

Tulsi, the purest and most sublime plant, has been known and worshipped in India for more than five millennia for its remarkable healing properties. The anti-flu property of Tulsi has been discovered by medical experts across the world quite recently. Tulsi improves the body's overall defence mechanism including its ability to fight viral diseases.

Apart from acting as a preventive medicine in case of swine flu, Tulsi can help the patient recover faster. Even when a person has already contracted swine flu, Tulsi can help in speeding up the recovery process and also help in strengthening the immune system of the body.

Tulsi can control swine flu and it should be taken in fresh form. Juice or paste of at least 20-25 medium sized leaves should be consumed twice a day on an empty stomach. This increases the resistance of the body and, thereby, reduces the chances of inviting swine flu.

As its name suggests, Tulsi has again proved to be 'the incomparable' medicine - this time, in the prevention and cure of swine flu.

Three varieties of Tulsi leaves - Krishna, Vana and Katuki improve cell mediated immunity. These are anti-viral agents and improve body's resistance against various diseases including swine flu.

Moreover, the practitioners said taking Tulsi is safe as it has no side effects and can be taken along with other medicines. This is one of the main adantages of Ayurvedic medicines.

Publicity stunt by KKR?

If there is an award among all the IPL teams for the number of contraversies created by their team then it surely will go to KKR even though its just a week since the IPL has started. This is because this team is far far ahead of the others.

After their four captain theory, selecting cheerleaders through a contest, removal of ganguly as captain, and surely many momre to come in future...

A new threat has kolkata Knight riders in a fix. After the four captains theory from coach this time its the turn of an unidentified internet blogger.

Joy Bhattacharya, CEO, Knight Riders, said, "There is a blogspot which a team member showed me this morning (April 19) which purports to be from a member of the KKR entourage. Poison pen writing of the dirtiest variety, but far too many factual errors".

Some are named, while others have unambiguous nicknames such Lordie or Lord Almighty (Sourav Ganguly), Calypso King (Chris Gayle), Sheikh of the Tweak (Shane Warne), Kaan Moolo (Agit Agarkar).

In his latest post on Monday, the blogger says the team management has "started a witch hunt to ferret out the mole within 24 hours" and that "four youngsters have been shortlisted". But he is "not on the list".

This is the link of the blog. Fake IPL Player

ICC to meet BCCI, ICL

On monday ICC is going to meet ICL and BCCI to end the long standing fight between the two. Note sure if the talks will bear any fruit but this is the first time ICC is going to intervene and try to solve the issue. ICC is under intense pressure from many other boards to recongnize ICL and consider it as a legal entity since many of its players have joined ICL. specifically New zealand, pakisthan and bangadesh cricket boards. BCCI has been putting a lot of pressure on these boards to ban its players who join the ICL. With the economic slowdown going on all over the sponsors for the game have become less, although denied by BCCI.

If the meeting is successful, then it would be break the most powerful BCCI monopoly over cricket in India. With the introduction of the ICL the monopoly got a serious threat but its looks like the slowdown is going to prove to be a boon for ICL. Lets hope that this meeting is successful and we get to see much better matches than IPL.

Updates:

The ICC, ICL and BCCI failed to reach a resolution after a three-hour meeting in Johannesburg on the unauthorised league's request for official recognition. No further discussions are scheduled and the ICL's application will be now be considered once again by the ICC executive board in April. :(

brain drain

why brain drain in India is very high. If you look at the recent events happening in India you will realise the reason why.
Mr. Narayan Murthy was appointed special IT adviser for Sri lankan president. Murthy was critisized by many political leaders. Naturally he would be fed up of it and now has decided to head the IT department in that country and develop it.
In the need of crisis situation we need someone like him to bring things back to normal, but its very sad to see that he is willing to help other countries before ours. Not his mistake though. When asked about this decision he said that it is his personal matter and wouldnt like to comment on it. He has already set up a big Infosys center in Sri Lanka. He is like a god father of IT industry in that country. So when someone gives a good recognition that he deserves to he would obviously accept it.

brew mobile platform (BMP) Vs android google

Qualcomm's brew mobile platform (BMP) the latest version of brew has a lot of modifcations compared to its previous version. The changes seem to be mainly targeting the challenge given by android, the open source platform from google. Qualcomm is a member of the OHA, a partner in the development of Android as well.

BMP has some unique featues like it supports lua scripts, flash programming, trigML, lua and trigML debugging capabilities. The combination of such powerful programming languages in one platform is a boon the developer.

The platform is open which allows a wide range of applicatons to be developed. Even though the platform is open, the source is still not open. A lot of code is made open to the OEM's and not to the developer.

One of the biggest disadvantages or advantage in being a BREW developer is that for the developer to post any application in the server and to be downloaded by the user the process is very lengthy and expensive. With the introduction of BMP Qualcomm claims that the certification process is greatly simplified and takes less than 2 days. But yet for the application to be available to the user it needs to be uploaded by the operator/carrier. This process may take lot of time. The same in the case of android market is very simple. The developer just needs to upload it in the market and the user can directly download it from there. The only difference is that the applications can be bug prone and its not certified. You may not get tech support for these apps.

Evaluation of android platform

The android platform is a mixture of Linux kernel and a Java application interface. Evaluation

The Linux kernel is very well tested over the years. In android, this has been slightly modified to suit the embedded / mobile environment. Linux as a OS is the most stable. So having the same as a mobile OS is also good.

For the developers the Java platform is most suitable for developing applications, since you don't have to worry about pointer and OO language increases the usability and maintainability of the system. Java forms one of the largest developer communities. So this combination is ideally suited for a mobile platform. Since java runs very slowly on a mobile, the virtual machine is modified. The Dalvik virtual machine is register based instead of the usual stack based VM's. This supposedly runs much faster.

Overall the platform looks very well organised and suits the mobile environment. Now after making this a open source we need to see the role of google in promoting and maintaining this platform.
